After the release of Toy Story 4 in 2019, there was a lot of discussion and even controversy surrounding the future of the franchise. For a long time, there were no clear updates about Toy Story 5. However, toward the end of 2024, Pixar Animation Studios officially announced that Toy Story 5 is on its way. Now, new details about the movie have started to emerge.

Toy Story 5 Central Theme

The core theme of Toy Story 5 reflects a very real and modern issue: children are no longer playing with toys as much as they used to. With the rise of smartphones and digital devices, kids are increasingly focused on screens instead of physical play.

This concept plays a major role in the film’s storyline. The movie is expected to be more emotional, highlighting how toys struggle to stay relevant in a tech-driven world.

Story Overview

After Woody leaves Bonnie to help lost toys find new owners, Jessie becomes the leader of Bonnie’s room, with Buzz Lightyear as her second-in-command.

However, Bonnie—now 8 years old—has shifted her attention to a new favorite gadget called “Lilypad,” a frog-like tablet. This device takes up most of her time, causing Jessie, Buzz, and the other toys to feel neglected.

Jessie’s Emotional Storyline Returns

One of the most emotional arcs in the franchise comes from Toy Story 2, where Jessie’s heartbreaking past was revealed—her former owner Emily abandoned her.

In Toy Story 5, Jessie’s story takes another emotional turn. According to reports, she returns to her old home, once owned by Emily. Although Emily no longer lives there, a new girl named Blaze now resides on the property.

New Character: Blaze

Blaze is described as a bold, expressive “horse girl” who grew up on a ranch. She loves playing with toys and collecting horse memorabilia. She owns a real horse named Daffodil and a pig named Jimmy Dean.

An image from the film reportedly shows Jessie and Bullseye riding Daffodil—Jessie looks happy, while Bullseye seems a bit nervous.

New Setting: Ranch Adventure

The ranch setting introduces a Western-style storyline. Jessie meets several new toy characters, including:

  • Smarty Pants – a potty-training expert with a quirky personality
  • Atlas – a GPS tracker
  • Snappy – a digital camera

Director Andrew Stanton imagined this environment as a Western-inspired world, where Jessie embraces her cowgirl identity.

Conflict & Emotional Depth

Jessie arrives at the ranch after a failed plan to pull kids away from digital devices like Lilypad. Despite enjoying the adventure, she faces emotional challenges tied to her past—especially memories of Emily.

Although Emily may not appear directly in the film, her presence will still influence Jessie’s journey. There is also a long-standing fan theory suggesting Emily grew up to become Andy’s mother. Toy Story 5 could confirm or dismiss this theory.

Release Date & Future of the Franchise

Toy Story 5 is expected to release on June 19, 2026.

Director Andrew Stanton has also hinted at the possibility of more sequels. During a two-month brainstorming session focused on the lifecycle of toys, the team generated enough ideas for potentially two more films.

While nothing is officially confirmed, this suggests that the Toy Story universe could expand beyond Bonnie’s story in the future.

Toy Story 5 is shaping up to be one of the most emotional entries in the franchise, blending nostalgia with modern themes like technology’s impact on childhood. With Jessie’s return to her past, new characters, and a deeper story, the film promises both heart and adventure for fans worldwide.
