Why the Transformers Franchise Is Dying After Michael Bay Era?

The era of Transformers might really be coming to an end. After Michael Bay’s Transformers series, the reboot movies failed to perform at the same level. Then came Transformers One, which ended up becoming a major box-office flop. Because of this, the future of the franchise now seems uncertain. But why is this happening? In today’s video, you’ll find out.

Just like Paramount Pictures’ other major franchise Star Trek, the future of the Transformers franchise also looks very unclear right now. After the golden era of the 2000s, Transformers slowly started losing its brand popularity. Back then, the franchise was at its peak: Michael Bay’s huge-budget movies, multiple cartoon series, and massive merchandising turned Transformers into a huge pop-culture phenomenon. But after that, the movies struggled to bring back the same level of success and hype. Especially the live-action films — none of them were able to recreate the impact of the Michael Bay era.

Still, fans had one major hope they were excited about. In 2023, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was released, continuing Paramount’s ongoing soft reboot aimed at bringing the movies closer to the classic G1 cartoon series. But the film’s ending completely shocked fans. In the final moments, it’s revealed that the legendary military organization G.I. Joe exists in this new Transformers universe. That officially set up a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover universe — a reveal that made longtime fans extremely excited.

Since 2023, fans have been waiting for a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie. The franchise producers also kept teasing that the project was coming in the future. But at the same time, reports of several other Transformers movie projects being in development started surfacing. With so many projects in the pipeline, fans had one big question: when exactly will the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover release?

And now, unfortunately, an important person closely connected to the project has confirmed that the crossover is not coming anytime soon.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. is currently working on the Man on Fire series reboot. During an interview with Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan, he shared an update about the future of the Transformers franchise. When asked about the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover, he gave some disappointing news. Steven Caple Jr. said he still has big plans for the crossover, but “we’ll see what happens.” He also confirmed that he is not involved with the next Transformers movie, although the project is still in development and “anything can happen.”

In 2024, Derek Connolly — who worked on Kong: Skull Island and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — was hired to write the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie. But later, development slowed down significantly and the project was effectively stalled. Still, longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura tried to keep fans hopeful. Speaking to ComicBook, he said they would “definitely deliver the promise” they made. He explained that since the beginning of the franchise, fans have always asked: “When is G.I. Joe coming?”

But looking at the recent updates and the studio’s priorities, it seems that the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover is no longer Paramount’s top priority, no matter how excited the fans are.

The first signs that the crossover project was either stalled or dead appeared last month. It was revealed that Paramount Pictures is actively developing two separate G.I. Joe reboot versions: one script is being written by Max Landis, writer of Chronicle, while another is being developed by comedian/actor/writer Danny McBride, who has worked on the Halloween franchise. Because of this, fans started believing that Paramount probably wouldn’t invest in both a solo G.I. Joe franchise and a Transformers crossover at the same time. And now it looks like that assumption may be true.

Last summer, another report claimed that Paramount wants Michael Bay to return and create a new movie set in his original Transformers universe. At the same time, director Josh Cooley — who directed the animated Transformers One — is reportedly moving toward directing a live-action Transformers film, separate from Bay’s universe.

For now, both new Transformers projects and new G.I. Joe projects remain in active development at Paramount. However, no official release dates have been announced for any of them.

At this point, it feels like studios are slowing down on the idea of turning every popular IP into a massive cinematic universe. Earlier, it seemed like multiple Transformers movies, a G.I. Joe reboot, and a huge crossover event were all being developed simultaneously. But now, it appears studios are going with a “back-to-basics” approach to make these franchises fresh and successful again.

So if two major writers are currently focused on G.I. Joe projects, then perhaps that franchise has become Paramount’s main priority for now.

But there’s another side to this story.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts earned around $441.7 million worldwide against a budget of roughly $200 million. The profit margin wasn’t huge, but it still proved that audiences are willing to watch Transformers movies — just maybe not within Michael Bay’s original five-film continuity anymore.

There’s still a small bit of hope left. It’s possible that the G.I. Joe reboots being written by Danny McBride and Max Landis could secretly include Transformers crossover elements. Early reports suggest both writers are mainly focusing on G.I. Joe, but honestly, both are experienced enough to handle a huge Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover event as well.

Logistically, the crossover doesn’t even need to be an overly massive or complicated event. Recently, 20th Century Studios set a great example with the Alien and Predator franchises. Director Dan Trachtenberg smoothly connected both universes into a shared world. The latest example is Predator: Badlands, where a Predator serves as the main protagonist while an android from the Alien franchise appears in a supporting role.

Interestingly, nobody officially called it a “crossover film,” but in practical terms, the universes are now connected. And because of that, both the Alien and Predator franchises currently have a very promising future.

Similarly, Paramount doesn’t need to overthink this situation because a blueprint already exists. For years, Skybound Entertainment has been developing the “Energon Universe,” a shared comic-book universe where multiple Transformers comics and G.I. Joe titles all exist in one connected world.

The Energon Universe has a darker, more violent, sci-fi horror tone, and fans absolutely love it. So logically, Paramount could simply adapt this successful comic concept for the big screen.

In today’s modern era, the line between military combat, advanced weaponry, AI, and futuristic technology has almost disappeared. So unless the new G.I. Joe reboot is set in a very retro 1980s-style world, it could naturally fit alongside the Transformers universe both visually and tonally.

So why keep the two franchises separate?

For now, there’s still no official development timeline or release date confirmed for either the next G.I. Joe reboot or the next Transformers movie. Maybe in the future, things will finally come together.

And honestly, that’s the only hope fans still have from Paramount Pictures.
