HBO Max is expanding the Wizarding World once again, even before its highly anticipated Harry Potter TV reboot arrives later this year. The streaming platform has announced a new companion project, Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast, set to debut on May 19, 2026.
While details about the podcast remain limited, its title suggests a retrospective look at the eight Harry Potter films released between 2001 and 2011. The project follows a growing trend in which major networks release official companion podcasts for their flagship franchises. HBO has previously done this for series like Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, True Detective, Watchmen, The Gilded Age, and Chernobyl, among others. These podcasts typically offer behind-the-scenes insights, cast interviews, and deeper discussions about the source material.
Although the podcast will debut on HBO Max, it is expected to be available across major podcast platforms, similar to HBO’s previous releases. Another podcast, Insecuritea: An Insecure Podcast (seasons 4 and 5), is also scheduled to arrive on the service starting May 1.
The Harry Potter franchise remains one of the most successful and beloved in entertainment history, despite facing controversies in recent years. Criticism surrounding the Fantastic Beasts spinoff films and author J.K. Rowling’s public statements has impacted the brand’s reception. Warner Bros. initially planned five Fantastic Beasts films, but after declining reviews and box office performance for the second and third installments, the series was halted after three.
In response, the studio shifted its focus back to the original Harry Potter books. The upcoming TV adaptation will retell the story in greater detail, with each season dedicated to one novel.
The new series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, stepping into roles originally made famous by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson in the film series. The show is scheduled to premiere in December 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
The original films, released over a decade from 2001 to 2011, were both critically and commercially successful. Although they did not win any Academy Awards, they received generally positive reviews (with Rotten Tomatoes scores ranging from 76% to 96%) and grossed approximately $7.7 billion worldwide, making Harry Potter one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time.
As anticipation builds for the TV reboot, HBO has already released a teaser trailer and a behind-the-scenes special. Now, with the launch of Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast, the studio is inviting fans to revisit the original films while preparing for the next chapter in the Wizarding World.
