Steven Caple Jr., director of Netflix’s upcoming Man on Fire series, has teased that the show contains several subtle Easter eggs connected to the 2004 film adaptation and legendary filmmaker Tony Scott.

The seven-episode Netflix series is based on A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel Man on Fire, which was previously adapted into the acclaimed 2004 action thriller starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott. In the film, Washington played former CIA operative turned mercenary John Creasy, a man driven by revenge after a tragic kidnapping.

For Netflix’s adaptation, the role of John Creasy is now played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Steven Caple Jr. Confirms Tony Scott Tribute

During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Caple confirmed that the new series includes a hidden tribute to Tony Scott, though he says only dedicated fans of the late director are likely to notice it.

“I do have a nod to Tony Scott, but it's only if you're a Tony Scott fan that you would actually catch it in the scene. I will say that. Yeah, there are definitely nods that we got to keep throughout the edit that I'm excited about. So if you're a Tony Scott fan, let me know if you catch it.”

Caple also revealed that multiple references to the 2004 film were preserved during editing, ensuring longtime fans have something familiar to look out for without overshadowing the new adaptation.

A New Creative Vision With Familiar Connections

While Netflix’s Man on Fire is being developed by a completely different creative team, Caple’s comments suggest the show still respects the legacy of Tony Scott’s film.

The director also serves as an executive producer and helms the first two episodes of the series. Caple is best known for directing films such as:

  • The Land
  • Creed II
  • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

The remaining episodes are directed by:

  • Vicente Amorim – Episodes 3 & 4
  • Clare Kilner – Episodes 5 & 6
  • Michael Cuesta – Episode 7

All seven episodes are written by Kyle Killen, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer.

The original 2004 film featured an impressive ensemble cast including:

  • Denzel Washington
  • Dakota Fanning
  • Christopher Walken
  • Mickey Rourke
  • Radha Mitchell
  • Marc Anthony

In Netflix’s adaptation, Bobby Cannavale takes on the role of Paul Rayburn, originally portrayed by Christopher Walken.

The new series cast also includes:

  • Billie Boullet

  • Paul Ben-Victor

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Continues Strong Momentum

Leading the series is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who recently starred as Simon Williams in Marvel’s Wonder Man.

The MCU series performed strongly, earning:

  • 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes
  • 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes

The show was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, particularly highlighting Abdul-Mateen’s performance. Following its success, Wonder Man was officially renewed for a second season.

Man on Fire Aims to Honor the Past While Building Something New

Although major differences are expected between the 2004 movie and Netflix’s television adaptation, the inclusion of Tony Scott tributes and film Easter eggs suggests the series will maintain a strong connection to its cinematic predecessor.

For longtime fans of Man on Fire, these hidden details may offer an added layer of nostalgia while introducing a new version of John Creasy to modern audiences.
