The Resident Evil franchise has already been rebooted twice in recent years. First came Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021, followed by Netflix’s live-action Resident Evil TV series in 2022. However, neither project managed to replicate the box office success or long-term popularity of Milla Jovovich’s Resident Evil universe, which dominated theaters for over a decade.
Now, after multiple failed attempts to restart the franchise, Sony is preparing yet another reboot for 2026, with both fans and director Zach Cregger hoping this version can finally deliver the adaptation audiences have been waiting for—and potentially launch an entirely new cinematic series.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Reboot Begins Marketing Campaign
Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot is slowly building momentum, and the recent launch of an official website strongly suggests that the film’s marketing campaign is now officially underway.
After making a strong horror debut with Barbarian, Cregger followed it up with another major success in 2025 with Weapons. The film performed exceptionally well, with actress Amy Madigan even winning an Academy Award for her performance as the villainous witch Gladys. Due to the character’s popularity, a Gladys spin-off project is reportedly already in development.
For now, however, Cregger’s primary focus is reviving the iconic Resident Evil video game franchise on the big screen.
Fans will remember that while the Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil franchise ran for many years and became commercially successful, many believed the series eventually overstayed its welcome. Meanwhile, 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City captured the visual style of the games but failed to fully recreate their atmosphere, tension, and survival-horror identity.
A Director Who Understands Resident Evil
Unlike some previous adaptations, Cregger is a longtime fan of the Resident Evil games and has openly expressed his love for the franchise.
The core appeal of Resident Evil has always been its combination of terrifying zombies, grotesque mutated creatures, and an oppressive survival-horror atmosphere. Cregger reportedly wants to faithfully recreate that same experience in cinematic form.
Perhaps the most surprising creative decision is that the reboot will not directly adapt familiar game protagonists. Instead of focusing on iconic characters like Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, or Jill Valentine, Cregger is introducing original characters.
His goal appears to be giving audiences the same uncertainty and unpredictability players feel while exploring the games.
First Logo Revealed, Trailer Likely Coming Soon
Although the trailer has not yet been released, Sony recently launched an official Resident Evil website featuring the reboot’s first logo reveal.
The new logo embraces a gritty and minimalist design, using distressed typography that reflects the movie’s darker tone and survival themes.
The website’s launch is especially exciting because it strongly suggests Sony is preparing to release the first trailer soon. There is a strong possibility that the trailer could premiere directly on the new website in the coming weeks.
Cast and Story Details
Cregger is reuniting with his Weapons star Austin Abrams, who will reportedly lead the film.
The cast also includes:
- Zach Cherry (Severance)
- Paul Walter Hauser (The Fantastic Four: First Steps)
According to reports, the story follows a medical courier named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams. During a late-night delivery, Bryan arrives in Raccoon City and soon finds himself trapped in an increasingly terrifying situation.
The official synopsis states that Bryan becomes caught in Raccoon City as one “fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.”
Inspired by Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3
While the movie will not directly adapt any specific game, Zach Cregger has confirmed that the reboot is heavily inspired by the atmosphere and timeline of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
This strongly suggests the film may be set during the catastrophic outbreak that ultimately forced Raccoon City into quarantine—the same event that serves as the foundation of Resident Evil 2.
If true, fans could witness one of the franchise’s most iconic disasters from a completely fresh perspective. Instead of following the usual heroes, audiences would experience the outbreak through Bryan’s eyes, emphasizing the raw horror, helplessness, and chaos of the city’s collapse.
This approach aligns perfectly with Cregger’s vision: rather than creating a direct game adaptation, he wants to recreate the emotional and atmospheric experience of actually playing Resident Evil.
What Is Resident Evil About?
Despite 11 mainline games and seven live-action adaptations, Resident Evil’s core story remains straightforward.
At the center of the franchise is Umbrella Corporation, an international pharmaceutical company secretly manufacturing bio-organic weapons.
Their most dangerous creation is the T-virus, a biological weapon that infects living organisms and transforms them into horrifying zombies and mutated creatures. Once the virus spreads uncontrollably, entire cities collapse into chaos.
Throughout the games, players control various survivors attempting to expose Umbrella and survive its experiments, including fan-favorite characters such as:
- Chris Redfield
- Jill Valentine
- Leon S. Kennedy
Their shared mission is simple: survive long enough to stop Umbrella from destroying the world.
Release Date and Early Reactions
Additional plot details remain under wraps for now. However, some footage was recently screened at CinemaCon, further increasing fan excitement.
Interestingly, the reboot has reportedly been compared internally to Mad Max: Fury Road, described as a nonstop horror-action experience.
Early rumors also suggest the film could have a lean runtime of around 90 minutes, though no official runtime has been confirmed.
With the movie currently scheduled to release on September 18, 2026, fans can likely expect a rapid rollout of trailers, story details, and additional marketing material in the coming weeks.
Can This Be the Best Resident Evil Movie Yet?
After two unsuccessful reboot attempts and years of mixed adaptations, many fans remain cautious. Still, everything revealed so far suggests that Zach Cregger may finally be taking the franchise in the right direction.
By focusing on atmosphere, tension, horror, and a fresh perspective rather than simply recreating game moments, this new reboot has the potential to become what many fans have wanted for years:
the best Resident Evil movie adaptation to date.
