Sean Gunn has built a career around embracing eccentric, unconventional characters. From his breakout role as Kirk Gleason on Gilmore Girls to memorable performances in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the emerging DC Universe, Gunn continues to evolve into one of genre entertainment’s most versatile supporting actors.
In a recent interview with ComicBook at LVLUP Expo, Gunn opened up about playing Maxwell Lord in Superman and Peacemaker, revisited Kraglin’s emotional arc across the Guardians trilogy, and discussed the unexpected creative challenge of portraying Weasel.
Sean Gunn on Maxwell Lord’s Expanding Role in the DCU
Although audiences have only seen a glimpse of Gunn’s interpretation of Maxwell Lord so far, the actor hinted that the character’s influence will stretch across multiple corners of the DCU.
“I am very excited to see Maxwell Lord interact with any corner of the DC Universe,” Gunn explained. “His fingerprints are on a lot of things.”
Gunn emphasized that this version of Maxwell Lord is far more than a standard billionaire archetype.
“He isn’t just a billionaire; he is a superbillionaire. He is one of the richest men the world has ever known. We know the kind of power that those people have, and he has that power because of his wealth.”
The actor suggested that future stories will explore whether Lord’s motivations lean toward altruism or self-interest.
“Is there some kind of altruism still in there? Is there a pathway where he’s this wealthy but using it to make the world a better place? Or is he angling for his own sort of power? That’s stuff that I’m really pleased to explore.”
Gunn also noted that while the new DCU version draws inspiration from the comics, it will ultimately carve out its own identity.
“There are different incarnations of the character, and I think we have our own path that we’re taking with it.”
Weasel Became One of Sean Gunn’s Biggest Surprises
Another standout DC role for Gunn has been Weasel, who first appeared in The Suicide Squad before returning in Creature Commandos.
According to Gunn, the character evolved far beyond what he originally expected.
“Weasel in the DC Universe is a character that really kind of smacked me in the face,” he admitted.
Initially conceived largely as comic relief, Weasel later developed a surprisingly emotional backstory in Creature Commandos.
“He has such a rich backstory. It’s extremely challenging because I can’t speak. I’m still beholden to his squawks and grunts and shrieks.”
Despite those limitations, Gunn described the role as one of the most creatively rewarding performances of his career.
Revisiting Kraglin’s Emotional Journey in Guardians of the Galaxy
Fans of the Guardians trilogy watched Kraglin Obfonteri transform from a minor Ravager into one of the team’s emotional anchors.
Gunn revealed that the character’s trajectory was unclear during the production of the first film.
“We played a lot on set with him being either a little more sinister or a little crazier,” he said.
It wasn’t until the second movie that Gunn fully understood Kraglin’s role in the story.
“Kraglin’s story is really the prodigal son story in a lot of ways,” he explained. “Quill is the prodigal son who’s welcomed with open arms, and Kraglin is like, ‘I’ve been here the whole time! What about me?’”
That emotional dynamic, particularly Kraglin’s loyalty to Yondu Udonta, became central to the character’s development throughout the trilogy.
Why Sean Gunn Loves Working With James Gunn
Having collaborated for years with his brother, filmmaker James Gunn, Sean Gunn described the experience as uniquely comfortable and creatively fulfilling.
“I love working with James more than anything,” he said. “When I know that I’m going to work on one of his projects, I’m relieved.”
Gunn compared the experience to putting on a favorite old t-shirt.
“I know what his sets are like. I know how prepared he is. I know how to talk to him. We’ve developed that shorthand over decades.”
The two have collaborated extensively across Marvel and DC projects, including Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker.
How Would Kirk From Gilmore Girls Handle a Gaming Convention?
Of course, Gunn also reflected on one of his earliest fan-favorite roles — Kirk Gleason.
When asked how Kirk would react to attending LVLUP Expo, Gunn laughed before imagining the character’s response.
“I don’t think he’s much of a gamer, but I think he would definitely be into the cosplay element of it all.”
Still, Gunn believes Kirk would ultimately feel overwhelmed by the scale and energy of the event.
“Kirk feels very insular to me, like he has not experienced the world in its fullness. I think more than anything, he would be kind of blown away by all of it.”
