Andy Serkis’ latest directorial effort, Animal Farm, has sparked mixed reactions, continuing his uneven track record behind the camera despite his legendary status in motion capture performances.

From Motion Capture Pioneer to Director

Over the past two decades, Serkis became synonymous with motion capture acting through iconic roles like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Caesar in the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy. He later transitioned into directing, debuting with Breathe, starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.

While Breathe was well received, his subsequent projects—including Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage—have drawn more divided responses.

A New Take on a Classic Story

Serkis’ latest film adapts Animal Farm by George Orwell, the famous allegorical tale about farm animals rebelling against human oppression, only to fall under a new tyranny led by pigs.

This marks the third screen adaptation of the novel, following versions released in Animal Farm and Animal Farm.

Critics vs. Audiences

The 2026 adaptation has struggled with critics, earning a 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, have responded more positively, giving it a 61% rating—an improvement over the 1999 version but still trailing the 1954 classic.

Some viewers praise the film’s entertainment value and modern themes, while others—particularly fans of the original novel—take issue with its significant deviations.

Controversial Changes to Orwell’s Message

Orwell’s Animal Farm is widely known as a political allegory of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Stalinist era in the Soviet Union. Its core message warns how power can corrupt even the most idealistic revolutions.

Serkis’ version shifts that focus by introducing a new protagonist, Lucky, and framing the story as a coming-of-age narrative. Critics argue that this approach dilutes the novel’s sharp political commentary and replaces it with a softer, less impactful message.

A More Hopeful Ending

One of the most debated changes is the film’s ending. In contrast to the novel’s bleak conclusion, Serkis opted for a more hopeful tone. He explained that the harsh realities of today’s world inspired him to offer audiences a sense of possibility and optimism, suggesting that change is still achievable despite history’s cycles.

What’s Next for Andy Serkis?

Despite mixed reactions, Serkis shows no signs of slowing down as a director. He is set to helm The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, where he will also reprise his role as Gollum. The film is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.

A Star-Studded Cast

Animal Farm features an impressive voice cast, including:

  • Seth Rogen
  • Gaten Matarazzo
  • Steve Buscemi
  • Glenn Close
  • Laverne Cox
  • Kieran Culkin
  • Woody Harrelson
  • Jim Parsons
  • Kathleen Turner
  • Iman Vellani

The screenplay was adapted by Nicholas Stoller, with distribution handled by Angel Studios.

Now Playing

Despite its divisive reception, Animal Farm is now playing in theaters, offering audiences a modern—and controversial—reimagining of one of literature’s most enduring political fables.
