Matt Reeves Finally Completes The Batman 2 Script For DC

When The Batman released on 4 March 2022, it became one of the biggest successes for DC in recent years. Starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, the movie earned around $772 million worldwide at the box office and received huge praise from both critics and fans. For DC fans, it felt like Batman had finally returned in a darker, more detective-focused style that perfectly matched Gotham’s atmosphere.

And honestly, Batman is one of those characters whose popularity never fades. Whether someone is a Marvel fan or a DC fan, Batman always creates massive excitement. Many fans, including die-hard DC supporters, have been eagerly waiting for the sequel.

However, The Batman Part II has been surrounded by controversies and delays. The film’s release date has reportedly been postponed three times, which created a lot of discussion across the internet. Because of these delays, many fans started worrying about the movie’s production status and creative direction.

One of the biggest talking points recently has been the casting news. Although his name was not mentioned in the initial announcements, Sebastian Stan has now reportedly joined the project officially. The Marvel veteran recently spoke about becoming part of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. Reports also suggest that more major actors may be revealed soon, including Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance, along with the characters they could potentially play.

On 7 May, director Matt Reeves shared the first look from production tests for The Batman Part II. The footage featured the Batmobile and strongly hinted at a winter setting for the 2027 movie. Snow-covered Gotham instantly grabbed fans’ attention and suggested that the sequel may deliver an even darker and colder atmosphere than the first film.

After the ending of The Batman in 2022, the franchise expanded into television through The Penguin. The series focuses on Colin Farrell’s version of Oz Cobb, showing how he tries to rebuild his power after Gotham was flooded. The crime drama helped deepen Matt Reeves’ grounded Gotham universe and proved that this Batman franchise could successfully grow beyond movies.

Fans are also curious about how Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight will evolve in the sequel. Matt Reeves’ Batman universe exists separately from James Gunn’s main DC Universe and falls under the “Elseworlds” banner. This means Gunn’s DCU will feature a completely different Batman while Reeves continues building his own grounded interpretation.

In April 2026, Andy Serkis spoke about the sequel and praised Reeves’ script, saying that it explores a completely new direction for the Dark Knight. According to Serkis, the story will push Bruce Wayne into deeper emotional territory and further develop Reeves’ unique vision for Gotham City.

Another interesting casting rumor involves Charles Dance. Reports claim he may play Christopher Dent, the abusive and alcoholic father of Harvey Dent, also known as Two-Face. Fans noticed that Reeves used a GIF of Dance’s iconic Tywin Lannister character from Game of Thrones while teasing the announcement — a possible hint toward another cruel father figure role.

Meanwhile, actor Sebastian Koch has also reportedly joined the cast. Koch is known for projects like A Good Day to Die Hard, Bridge of Spies, and Homeland. Reeves teased his casting using a GIF from the Die Hard franchise along with the caption: “locked and loaded for Gotham.”

Because of this tease, fans are speculating that Koch could play a villain such as Hugo Strange, especially due to the possible Arkham Asylum connections inspired by Batman: The Long Halloween. However, some believe he could instead portray Harvey Bullock, depending on the direction Reeves chooses for the sequel.

Since 13 May, Matt Reeves has continuously confirmed cast members through cryptic GIF reveals. The returning cast currently includes:

  • Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne
  • Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth
  • Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon
  • Colin Farrell as The Penguin
  • Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál
  • Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez

One major surprise for fans was the absence of Zoë Kravitz from the returning cast announcements. Because of this, many now believe that Catwoman may not return in Part II.

Although the plot is still being kept secret, Matt Reeves has confirmed that the sequel will focus more heavily on Bruce Wayne himself. According to Reeves, the first movie was mainly centered around Batman, while Part II will explore the human being behind the mask. Instead of focusing only on Gotham’s criminals and villains, the sequel may dive deeper into Bruce Wayne’s emotions, personal struggles, trauma, and dual identity.

This direction fits perfectly with Reeves’ grounded and emotional detective-style Batman universe. Rather than simply delivering action scenes, the sequel appears ready to explore the psychological side of Bruce Wayne in a much deeper way.

After years of delays caused by the 2023 Hollywood union strikes and the long scripting process, filming for The Batman Part II is finally set to begin in England this June. Earlier this month, Reeves also shared camera test images showing the Batmobile driving through snow along with a large explosion sequence. These visuals gave fans a small glimpse of the film’s dark winter atmosphere.

As of now, The Batman Part II is officially scheduled to release on 1 October 2027 — if there are no more delays. Fans around the world are now eagerly waiting to see which new villains, mysteries, and surprises Matt Reeves brings into Gotham next.
